PROVEN PERFORMANCE. REAL WORLD RESULTS

Driving CO₂ emissions reduction across the global fleet

At Nippon Paint Marine, we work tirelessly to support our customers in meeting the sustainability challenges that they face; helping them to reduce CO₂ emissions and fuel costs, which improve the operational efficiency and profitability of their fleets. And in doing so, helping the industry strive towards meeting its decarbonisation targets.

But ultimately, it’s the results that count.

Since launch, combined, our low friction hull coatings have provided a reduction of over 45 million tonnes in CO₂ emissions from our customers’ vessels.

That’s real impact.

  • AQUATERRAS, the world’s first low-friction biocide-free self-polishing coating; a 800,000 tonne reduction, based on 25,700 tonnes per vessel, providing a 14.7% fuel saving*

And within Nippon Paint Marine’s HydroSmoothXTᵀᴹ enhanced range of anti-fouling solutions, which incorporates our unique hydrogel water-trapping technology:

  • FASTAR XI/XII, our low-friction, self-polishing antifouling coating which uses nanotechnology; a 12.4 million tonne reduction, based on 12,800 tonnes per vessel, providing a 14.1% fuel saving*
  • A-LF-Sea, an advanced version of LF-Sea delivering further propulsion benefits; a 29.1 million tonne reduction based on 14,400 tonnes per vessel, providing a 12.3% fuel saving*
  • LF-Sea, the world’s first biomimetic antifouling using hydrogel technology and the first in our HydroSmoothXT™ range; a 3.5 million tonne reduction, based on 6,300 tonnes per vessel, providing a 9.2% fuel saving*

*Compared to conventional market average hull coatings

Our detailed analysis surveyed over 3,500 ocean going vessels including bulk carriers, containers, PCCs, Ro-Ros, cruise ships, VLCCs, LPGs and LNGs, over an average period of 40 months. The data showed that our advanced hull coating technologies provide an average fuel saving and CO₂ reduction of 12.4%, compared to conventional market hull coatings.

“The shipping industry faces unprecedented challenges as it plots a pathway to decarbonisation. As the most viable and widely used clean technology on the market, hull coatings play a critical part in reducing fuel consumption and emissions. We’re very proud to support our customers and the industry with our proven, high performance antifouling solutions, delivering measurable and tangible results. And with our ongoing commitment to innovation, we will continue to help build a cleaner, more sustainable maritime world.”
