Strong on-site technical support has a vital role to play in ensuring hull coating systems perform as intended throughout a vessel’s lifecycle. At Nippon Paint Marine, our technical service engineers are at the forefront of this work, providing hands-on expertise that supports both quality and customer confidence.
In this edition of our employee blog series, we introduce Kong Kun, Technical Service Engineer at Nippon Paint Marine’s Shanghai office, specialising in on-site technical support for marine coating protection systems.
Kong Kun, Technical Service Engineer, Nippon Paint Marine Shanghai
As a Technical Service Engineer, I am responsible for on-site inspection and advisory for coating protection systems, ensuring that applications meet technical requirements while supporting customers’ needs. My role involves close collaboration with clients and shipyard teams, where attention to detail and adherence to standards are essential to achieving reliable coating performance.
I was motivated to join Nippon Paint Marine because the company’s philosophy aligns closely with my own personal values. The emphasis on responsibility, professionalism and long-term thinking by Nippon Paint Group and Nippon Paint Marine resonated with me, particularly the focus on serving customers and developing products and services to meet their needs.

Commitment on site
In my daily work, I strive to deliver good results by strictly following company requirements, continuously improving my technical skills and maintaining a strong service mindset. I believe that serving customers well means meeting reasonable requests without compromising the company’s interests or personal safety, while always upholding professional standards.
One piece of advice I have received that continues to guide me is: “Not knowing how to do something is one thing; choosing not to do it is quite another.” This perspective has reinforced for me the importance of initiative and responsibility in technical service work – if we never try, we will never achieve. Challenges are inevitable on site, but progress comes from taking action and learning from experience.
Learning through collaboration
One of the most interesting projects I have worked on recently involved a DANAOS project where senior technicians worked closely alongside junior technicians. This collaborative environment highlighted the value of knowledge sharing and teamwork, allowing experience to be passed on while strengthening overall technical capability on site.
I have also been impressed by the development opportunities at Nippon Paint Marine, particularly the humanised approach of the company and its corporate philosophy. This culture supports personal growth while encouraging employees to embody company values in their everyday work.
Through my role, I aim to continue delivering reliable technical support, building trust with customers and contributing to Nippon Paint Marine’s reputation for quality and professionalism in the marine coatings industry.
